The Georgia POW/MIA Honor Guard was formed to keep alive the memory of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service-members.
The Georgia POW/MIA Honor Guard was created by the Department of Georgia as a committee in June, 2013, under the direction of Bucky Jenkins who at the time was the chairman of the POW/MIA Committee under the Department of Georgia, American Legion. It consisted of two programs, one was a Remembrance Ceremony (Missing Man Table Ceremony) and the other was the Grand Old Opry Musical program.
In October 2016, the Department changed the program to align more closely with the mission of the Department of Defense. Then Department Commander Randy Goodman appointed Tommy Cannon as Commander of the Honor Guard who also assumed the position of chairman of the POW/MIA Committee along with co-chairs Jerry Price and Kathie Kennedy. This Team upgraded the the programs to include Color Guard, Flag Retirement, Casket Guards, and flag folding.
Post 29 in Marietta, GA became the home to the Honor Guard in 2017. In April 2020, the Honor Guard moved to Post 160 in Smyrna.
To keep the promise that our missing service members are not forgotten. To bring closure to their families. To make and keep everyone aware of the ongoing effort to keep their memories and hopes alive. To identify and return home as many of our missing as possible. To educate our younger generations of the efforts to recover our missing. And to commit ourselves and others to the pledge that until they are all home, that
“They Are Not Forgotten”.
The Honor Guard is recognized throughout the American Legion community in Georgia and are willing to travel and deliver programs throughout the State. The Honor Guard presented 64 programs in 2018 and 36 in 2019 all over the state of Georgia. Another duty of the Honor Guard is to report weekly to the American Legion Georgia community of any recoveries as recorded by the Department of Defense.
This is a dedicated team of volunteers working to keep the mission on everyone's mind and to push for more recoveries in the future to bring all of them home. if you would like to have one of our programs presented to your group or post just contact us and we will discuss what you need and set a date.
